World Suicide Prevention Day - September 10th
I’d like to take a take a moment to post about suicide prevention. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day put on by ISAP.
I lost my biological father due to suicide 10 years ago. I was only 13, and honestly at that age it is hard to process. I have lost friends, and have friends who have lost friends and family members.
Suicide isn’t something people do to “cop-out.” My dad fought for this country, and saw things that none of us could stomach. Some LGBT youth are bullied to death, and it’s not only the LGBT community being bullied.
Something many people don’t know, it is believed that there may be a genetic link to suicide. People who have suicidal thoughts or behavior, are more likely to have a family history of suicide.
A huge base of the LGBT community deal with suicidal thoughts. Suicide is the leading cause of death for LGBT youth. Not only that, but it is said that homosexual youth may represent up 30% of youth suicide deaths.
I myself, have even contemplated taking my own life before. I went to a therapist immediately to seek help.
Not only has it effected me personally, but in the last two months two icons who many people looked up-to lost their battle to suicide as well. (Robin Williams & Simone Battle)
I have seen, first hand, the impact it has on the person who commits suicide and the people who were close to them.
It’s not something people just do, its something that consumes and eats at a persons emotional and mental state over time.
Sometimes, all a person needs is encouragement or someone who will reach out and care. Sometimes, it may take a person seeking medical and psychological help.
Educate yourselves today so you can help others. Know the signs and know how to help.
